Dominican Cooperator Brother: Learn More about Br. Richard, OP

On August 10th, 2008, Brother Richard Horwell, OP (pictured at the right, with me) professed simple vows to the Order of Preachers (Dominicans). I asked Br. Richard if he could write me a short reflection about his vocation discernment, so that my readers could hear another cooperator brother's story. We in St. Louis are enjoying a deluge of rain, currently, which is mercifully making things cooler. I, for one, am ready for the chilly wind of Autumn. I love jacket weather.

What's a Brother?

Cooperator brothers are men whose love for God and desire to serve the Church have led them to seek to live as vowed religious. They are freed by the vow of poverty to give what they have to others; freed by the vow of obedience to do what the Church, through the Order, asks of them; and freed by the vow of chastity to love all those they encounter. With the support of their community of fellow Dominicans, they go about their prayer, study, ministry and preaching with joyful hearts. And though they are not priests, their lives are rooted in the sacramental life of the Church.
